Wordia Privacy Policy
Last updated September 25, 2026
Wordia is a language learning app for iOS and Android (the "App") published by Brainwave Learning Apps ("Brainwave", "we", "us" or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, why, who it is shared with, how long it is kept and the choices and rights you have. It also covers the Wordia pages of this website and the messages you send us.
By installing or using the App you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the App.
The short version
- No account and no sign up. The words you save, your folders, review history and settings stay on your device.
- On iOS, speech recognition, translation and voices run on your device.
- Online features (videos, texts to read, the AI tutor and answer check, translation on Android) send only what they need to the services that provide them.
- The free version shows ads, and the App uses analytics and crash reports, with the permission and consent choices your platform and region require.
- We do not sell your personal information for money, and you can opt out of personalized ads at any time.
- Questions go to [email protected].
1. Information the App handles
Information that stays on your device
Your learning and native languages, level and interests, the words and phrases you save with their sentences and video moments, folders, learning and review history, reading positions, theme and other settings. This information is stored only on your device and in your device backup if you have enabled backups with Apple or Google. We have no access to it.
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you choose to include, such as screenshots, your device model and the app version. We use it to answer you and to improve the App.
Content you send to online features
Search terms for videos and texts, the words and sentences you translate on Android, the text you type into the AI tutor, and the card word with your transcribed answer when the App asks an AI model to check it. This content goes to the services described in sections 3 and 4. We do not keep a database of it.
Microphone and speech
Listen mode and Say it use the microphone only while you use them and only after you grant permission. On iOS the audio is transcribed on your device by Apple's speech recognition and is not recorded, stored or uploaded by the App. On Android the speech recognition service of your device, usually provided by Google, transcribes it under its own privacy policy. We never receive or store your voice recordings.
Information collected automatically
When the App shows ads, measures how it is used or reports a crash, the services described in sections 5 and 6 collect device and usage information, such as device model, operating system and app version, language and time zone, IP address and the approximate location derived from it, the advertising identifier (with your permission where the law or the platform requires it), an app instance identifier, your interactions with the App and with ads, and crash and performance logs.
Purchases
Subscriptions and one time purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store or by Google through Google Play. We receive a confirmation of the purchase, such as the product, date, status and an anonymous transaction identifier, but never your name, payment card or billing address. Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account or Google Play settings.
What we do not collect
We do not ask for or collect your name, precise location, contacts, photos, health, financial or biometric information. Please do not send us such information.
2. How we use information
- To provide the App and its features, such as playing videos with subtitles, translating and pronouncing words, reading texts aloud, transcribing speech, checking answers, running the tutor, scheduling reviews and sending the reminders you set up.
- To show ads, measure their performance and limit how often you see them, personalized only with your permission or consent where the law or the platform requires it.
- To understand how the App is used, fix crashes and bugs and improve features.
- To answer your messages and requests.
- To keep the App and its users safe and to prevent fraud, spam and abuse.
- To comply with the law, enforce our terms and protect the rights, property and safety of our users, Brainwave and others.
- In connection with an organization, reorganization, merger, sale or transfer of the App or our business, see section 7.
Legal bases for users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. We process personal data to perform our contract with you (to provide the App you chose to use), for our legitimate interests (to keep the App working, secure and improving, to show non personalized ads that fund the free version, to answer your messages and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims), which we balance against your rights, with your consent (personalized ads, tracking and microphone access), which you can withdraw at any time without affecting earlier processing, and to comply with legal obligations.
3. Online services the App uses
Some features rely on third parties. They receive your IP address and the content of the request and process them under their own terms and privacy policies:
- Video search and playback use the official YouTube embedded player and YouTube services provided by Google. YouTube Terms of Service, Google Privacy Policy.
- Texts to read come from Project Gutenberg, Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) and Global Voices when you open or search for them. Wikimedia privacy policy.
- Translation on Android uses Google Translate services. On iOS translation runs on your device through Apple's Translation framework, and Apple may download language packs at your request.
- AI features use OpenAI and Google Gemini, see section 4.
- Apple and Google platform services handle app distribution, purchases, speech recognition, text to speech, notifications and backups under the Apple Privacy Policy and the Google Privacy Policy.
We do not control these services and are not responsible for their content, availability, security or privacy practices. We encourage you to read their policies.
4. AI features
The AI tutor, AI explanations and the answer check in Say it (used only when the check on your device is unsure about your spoken answer) send the text you typed, or the card word and your answer, to an AI provider, OpenAI or Google Gemini, directly or through our cloud function hosted on Google Cloud. We add no name, email, account or device identifier to these requests. The hosting provider may keep short lived technical logs, such as the IP address and time of a request, for security and troubleshooting.
OpenAI may use these inputs and outputs to improve its models under the OpenAI Privacy Policy, and Google's use is described in the Gemini API Additional Terms. Do not enter personal, confidential or sensitive information into the tutor or any other AI feature. You are responsible for the content you submit.
AI answers, answer checks, translations and explanations are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete or inappropriate. They are learning aids, not professional advice, and you should not rely on them for important decisions.
5. Advertising
The free version of the App shows ads served by Google AdMob and its mediation partners, such as AppLovin, Meta Audience Network, Unity (ironSource), Pangle, Mintegral and Liftoff (Vungle). The list of partners may change over time. These companies collect the information described in section 1 to deliver, measure and, where permitted, personalize ads, to limit how often you see an ad and to detect fraud, and they may combine it with information from other apps and websites under their own policies. How Google uses information from apps that use its services.
- iOS. The App asks for your permission through App Tracking Transparency before the advertising identifier is used to track you. If you decline, you still see ads, just not ones based on that identifier. You can change your choice at any time in Settings, Privacy and Security, Tracking.
- European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland. The App asks for your consent through Google's consent form, which follows the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework, before personalized ads are shown. You can change your choice at any time in the App settings.
- Android. You can delete or reset your advertising ID in your device settings under Google, Ads, or Privacy, Ads.
- US states. Under some US state laws, letting ad partners use your identifiers for personalized ads may count as "selling", "sharing" or "targeted advertising". You can opt out with the device settings above or by writing to us, see section 13.
Ads are provided by third parties. We do not endorse and are not responsible for the products, services or websites they promote.
6. Analytics and crash reports
The App uses Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to count how features are used (for example screens opened, features used, session length and app version) and to collect crash reports (device model, operating system and app version, and the state of the App when it crashed). This information is tied to a random app instance identifier, not to your name, and helps us fix problems and improve the App. It is kept for the periods set in Firebase and described in the Firebase privacy information.
7. How information is shared
- Service providers and partners described in sections 3 to 6, only to provide their services, under their terms and, where they act on our behalf, only for our purposes.
- Legal and safety reasons. To comply with laws, court orders, legal process or lawful requests of public authorities, to enforce our terms, to protect the rights, property and safety of our users, Brainwave or others, and to detect and prevent fraud and security issues.
- Organization and business transfers. Wordia is operated under the Brainwave Learning Apps name and may be organized into, or transferred to, a company or another legal entity, or be part of a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets or insolvency proceeding. Information we hold may be transferred to that entity, successor or acquirer, which will be bound by this Privacy Policy for that information unless you are notified otherwise.
- With your consent or at your direction.
- Aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you, for any purpose.
We do not sell your personal information for money.
8. How long information is kept
Information on your device stays there until you delete it or the App. We keep your emails as long as we need to answer you and keep a record of our correspondence, then delete them. The services described in sections 3 to 6 keep what they receive for the periods set out in their own policies. We may keep information longer when the law requires it or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
9. Security
The App sends its requests over encrypted connections (HTTPS), keeps your learning data on your device and we run no server that stores it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Protect your device with a passcode and keep it up to date. To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for unauthorized access to information caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including incidents at third party services.
10. International transfers
We and the services we use may process information in the United States and other countries whose data protection laws may differ from those of your country. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as adequacy decisions or the Standard Contractual Clauses of the European Commission used by our providers.
11. Children
The App is not directed to children under 13, or under the minimum age to consent to the processing of personal data in their country (up to 16 in some countries of the European Union), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information through the App, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Your choices and rights
Choices on your device
- Delete saved words in the App, or delete the App to remove everything it stored on your device.
- Allow or revoke microphone, speech recognition and notification access in your device settings.
- Allow or deny tracking on iOS, reset or delete your advertising ID on Android and change your ad consent in the App settings, see section 5.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, California and other US states, you may have the right to access your personal information, to correct it, to delete it, to receive a copy of it in a portable format, to object to or restrict its processing, to opt out of targeted advertising, profiling and the sale or sharing of personal information, and to withdraw a consent you gave. We will not treat you differently for using these rights. Residents of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland may also complain to their data protection authority.
How to make a request
Email [email protected] with the subject "Wordia privacy request". We may ask for information to verify your request, and an authorized agent may act for you with your signed permission. We answer within the time the law requires, usually 30 or 45 days. Because we keep no account or learning data on our servers, we may be unable to link information held by third party services to you, in which case we will explain how to use your device settings or contact that service directly. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision, and if your appeal is denied you may contact your state attorney general or data protection authority.
13. Notice for US state residents
This section supplements the policy for residents of California and other US states with consumer privacy laws.
- Categories collected in the last 12 months: identifiers (IP address, advertising identifier, app instance identifier, and your email address if you write to us), internet or other electronic network activity (interactions with the App and with ads), approximate geolocation derived from the IP address, inferences that ad partners may draw about your interests, and commercial information (purchase confirmations). Audio is processed on your device or by your device's speech service and is not collected by us. We do not collect sensitive personal information.
- Sources: you, your device and the services described in sections 3 to 6.
- Purposes: those in section 2.
- Disclosures for business purposes: identifiers, network activity and approximate geolocation to the platform, hosting, AI, translation, analytics and crash reporting providers.
- Sale or sharing: identifiers, network activity, approximate geolocation and inferences may be made available to advertising partners for cross context behavioral advertising, which some laws treat as a sale or sharing. You can opt out as described in section 5 or by emailing us. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
- California Shine the Light: we do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing purposes.
- Nevada: we do not sell covered information as defined by Nevada law. You may still send us an opt out request by email.
14. Other things you should know
- Automated decisions. The answer check decides whether a flashcard answer counts as right. It only affects your learning progress, has no legal or similarly significant effect on you, and you can always review or repeat a card.
- Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. These are browser signals. In the App, use the device and in-app controls described in sections 5 and 12. The Wordia pages of this website set no advertising or analytics cookies.
- Third party content and links. Videos, books, articles and websites reached through the App belong to their owners and are provided by third parties under their own terms. We are not responsible for their content or practices.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example when we add features or when the law changes, and we will change the date at the top when we do. When a change is material, we will also give notice in the App or on its store page where the law requires it. The updated policy applies from its date, and continuing to use the App after that means you accept it to the extent permitted by law.
16. Who we are and how to contact us
Wordia is published under the name Brainwave Learning Apps and may be distributed on the App Store and Google Play through the developer accounts of Brainwave Learning Apps or its affiliates. For any question about this Privacy Policy or your information, email [email protected] and put Wordia in the subject.
